Standard vs. Sawtooth
Excavator Rippers
Two working profiles. One starting point: the material you need to break up and the machine doing the work.
When the next job involves hard ground or roots, the attachment conversation often starts with a ripper. A single-point ripper concentrates the excavator’s effort at a narrow working point. It loosens material; a bucket or other handling attachment may still be needed to move what comes out.
East Attachments offers a standard ripper and a sawtooth double-serrated configuration. Choosing between them starts with the job description, rather than the most aggressive-looking profile.
What changes between the two?
Standard: a single-point working profile
The standard configuration is a starting point to discuss when the primary task is penetrating and loosening compacted material. Describe the ground itself: hard soil, frost, roots and rock are different conditions, even when they occur on the same site. A ripper selection should account for those differences and the carrier’s capability.
Sawtooth: serrations along the shank
The sawtooth configuration adds serrated edges to the ripper profile. Those edges are relevant when the work includes roots and stump-related ground preparation. It is still an excavator attachment, not a powered saw: the machine moves the tool through the material.
More serrations do not establish a universal speed advantage or a guaranteed root-cutting capacity. Root size, soil, embedded rock, machine size and working access all belong in the selection conversation.
Compare the job, then the profile.

Start with a useful job description.
“I need a ripper” gives the shop a product category. A description such as “I’m preparing a fence line with established roots, using a mini excavator with a quick coupler” gives the conversation a direction. Add photos of the material and explain what needs to happen after it is loosened.
If your work is mixed, say so. Ground preparation, root extraction and debris handling may call for different tools at different stages. Discuss whether a ripper, stumper, rake or bucket fits each part of the project rather than expecting one attachment to cover the entire process.
Have these details ready for a quote.
- Excavator make, model and operating weight.
- Direct pin-on or quick-coupler mounting, including the coupler make and model where applicable.
- Requested pin diameters, inside ear or bushing spacing, and pin-center measurements in millimeters.
- Standard or sawtooth preference, plus the material and project description.
- Delivery destination or shop-pickup preference, and any requested modifications.
