EXCAVATOR ATTACHMENTS
FOR Connecticut.
For Connecticut woodland and yard-tree cleanup, start by distinguishing loose branches and logs from rooted stumps. A project that retains surrounding trees needs a different equipment brief from complete site excavation. Compare handling, soil separation and root removal before deciding on attachment width.
Match the attachment to the work you intend to keep selective.
Use this guide to compare tools for selective cleanup · log handling · root removal. The state context below explains the applications; your machine, material and required finish determine the final attachment. These are selection recommendations, not statewide sales rankings.
PRIMARY
RECOMMENDATIONS.
Compare the task each attachment performs, then open the product to review its approved model, fitment, options and lead time.
Excavator Thumb
Adds holding control to a compatible bucket for loose logs and irregular debris. Provide bucket width, tooth reach and mounting details so the thumb can be matched to the existing setup.

Excavator Grapple Rake
Compare open-tine gripping when cleanup requires separating loose soil from roots and branches. Choose working width around access and the material being handled.

Stumper
Consider a stumper when designated roots must come out for the next stage of the project. Describe stump size and clearance around retained trees; it is not a substitute for a loose-debris handling tool.

For a Connecticut cleanup with trees to retain, should I add a thumb or choose a grapple rake?
If your bucket still performs most of the digging and only occasionally needs to hold loose wood, start with thumb compatibility. If repeated separation of branches and roots from loose soil is the main task, compare a grapple rake. Give the shop access dimensions and representative material sizes. Neither option removes the need to assess clearance and the effect of work around retained roots; quote a stumper separately only where root removal is part of the plan.
Choosing an excavator thumb →BEFORE YOU
INQUIRE.
- Identify the material that is already loose and the stumps that still require root removal.
- Include the narrowest access opening and photos showing nearby trees, fences or structures.
- For a thumb, supply the existing bucket and coupler details rather than machine tonnage alone.
- If stump removal is planned, explain the required finished condition and the area available to work.
- Always provide machine make and model, coupler type and required pin-on measurements. See the measurement guide →
